TONY McALEER
Author, speaker & agent of change
For fifteen years, Tony McAleer lived inside the white supremacist movement. He joined as a teenage skinhead, rose into its leadership, and helped carry white supremacy onto the early internet.
Leaving wasn’t a single moment; it was a process. Becoming a single father cracked something open. A thousand hours of counselling showed him what was underneath: not conviction, but shame, and a hunger to belong that the movement had been happy to feed. And then there were the people who showed him compassion he hadn’t earned, which changed him more than condemnation ever did.
He has spent the years since helping others find their way out. He co-founded Life After Hate and led it as Executive Director, testified before Congress, and worked with governments and law enforcement on two continents. His memoir, The Cure for Hate, and the PBS documentary that followed him to Auschwitz carry the same message he brings to every classroom and auditorium:
The ideology came later. The belonging came first.
So the answer has to start there too. Tony teaches curiosity, to question what we’re told and who we’re told to fear; compassion, to see the person behind the label; and courage, to act on what we see. They’re the same three things that helped him find his way back.
He is not asking anyone to forgive him. He is asking them to understand how it happens, so it happens to fewer young people.
